It is Chinese New Year after all. And my stomach has a way of sending signals to my brain, telling the latter that it's craving for some good ol' Chinese new year cookies. And the above glutinous rice ball sweet soup too. I wasn't a big fan of it, still isn't... but if I were given a bowl of that right now I'd devour everything in the bowl, slurp the soup dry, lick the bowl of any remaining drops. Just because, it reminds me of home and my mom. I still remember vividly as if it was just yesterday, my mom preparing this in the kitchen - and they're exactly the same color, pink and white only, and she was darn pissed at us for not helping her. Although in the end I did help a bit, and I took pics to divert her attention (and anger) I think she's still upset with us. Felt terribly guilty after that. Surprising how guilt doesn't go away even after a whole year..

This is one of my favorites. Then again, I have so,
so, many favs that the word 'fav' is beginning to sound futile already... :P Anyway, it's called kuih bangkit, don't ask me to translate to English cuz I dont have any friggin idea. Maybe someone can enlighten me? check out the wooden molds next to the kuih bangkit, that's how they're shaped! *duhhh* I thought it was cool how the mold is made of wood.. unlike all the jelly molds that are made of plastics. But of course... you can't possibly put a slab of wood in the freezer to make jelly, can you. *sheepish grin*

Peanut cookies!!!! In hokkien they're called "toh dao saw". Love it! And I'm sure peanut lovers out there would absolutely fall in love with it when they try it. Don't miss out the good things in life people! And I mean gooooood...! Go grab some if you can!

Picture above - kuih kapit. It's fan-shaped love letters without any filling in it. No coffee flavor, or strawberry or vanilla. Just plain. Which is still good nonetheless. I used to find different ways to eat it. haha stupid games of a child. Let me illustrate a lil' bit more: a) I'd try to break them off slice by slice, into all the triangle/fan-shapes and eat them individually; kinda like trying to dismantle a thing and eat them in parts. b) I tried to bite on them from one end to another in the smallest bite I can and count how many bites I need to finish the whole thing. c) I'd open my mouth as big as possible and stuff the whole thing in my mouth with the wide fan-shaped going in first, and try not to break it until the whole piece is in my mouth. crazy isn't it. Fun though! Try it! :) There's another thing that she made that was really good too, but I dont know what it's called so I couldnt search for the pic. Anyone knows what's the beehives-shaped crunchy thing called?

My grandma used to make all of the above. The pic above I got it from someone's blog (I forgot her name) and she's making kuih kapit with her grandma. I used to sit next to mine, looking at her making all these cookies. Such fond memories. :) Now she hardly does anything at all, except sitting on her chair, dozing off and waking up only for her meals. Wish I'd have more time with her and do smthg together with her...

Have I mentioned I absolutely love pineapple tarts? This is not the kind that I always eat, but it's the best pic I can find from the web that is clear. Look below, the ones in the plastic jar are the ones I eat at home all these years. My two bros would wipe them out so fast that I have to save some for myself in some other container and keep in my room!! They're such monsters! :P

And this is exactly how it looks like back home, dad will buy jars and jars of these and bring them back to Penang for relatives. Funny how ironic life is - when you're surrounded by an abundance of something, you don't really care/appreciate it; but when they're scarce you go running like some cluttering chicken chasing for it.

Happy CNY to you and Kam Loon.
I gone emmo after reading this post.
I was homesick too, missed all the cookie and the way you eat (the way I used to eat) the kueh kapih.
I feel sad when you talk about grandma.
I am going home on the first day of April, when aunt layyong told grandma about the news, she said they are joking with her as if she do not know that day is April fool day; its kind'f funny but at the same time sad that she do remember cetain things and forget a lot of other things. I will be in Japan end of March to visit uncle Hong first before I head home.
When will be your graduation next year? uncle Hong is asking me to go with him to attend your graduation. Will see, will see.
Take care !
Dagu
